5 Big Businesses Turning Green

Thick forest of trees from above

There is no shortage of companies who are suddenly using phrases like carbon neutral, net zero, climate positive, and carbon negative in their marketing and communications. But how much of that is buzz and how much is backed by action? As consumers, we have to get smarter. We have to understand that simply throwing a ‘green’ or ‘eco’ phrase onto some packaging does not make the product, nor the company, an environmental or sustainability warrior. We have to dig deeper than that, to look beneath the words to see that there’s substance. And happily we can report that plenty of companies aren’t just paying the climate lip service – 23% of Fortune 500 companies have actual, robust and ambitious climate goals. Today, we’re talking plastic. Some facts: If you didn’t know, plastic is made from petroleum. And only about 9% of that plastic has ever been recycled, 12% has been burned and the remaining 79% has ended up in landfills or the environment.

Plastic pollution is the most widespread problem affecting our marine environments. It threatens ocean health, food safety and quality, human health, coastal tourism, and contributes to climate change.

Sustainable Period

Tampon with Plastic Applicator

Today we’re talking periods and plastic. Before you decide this doesn’t concern you as someone who doesn’t menstruate, stick around. This is a plastic pollution issue that concerns all of us. In the United States alone, approximately 12 billion pads and 7 billion tampons are discarded each year. Most of this ends up in landfill where it can take centuries to breakdown. Some ends up in our waterways and then washed up on our beaches – sanitary products are the fifth most common item found on Europe’s beaches, more widespread than single-use coffee cups, cutlery or straws.
